Meehan Concerned About "Disastrous Mess' of Obamacare Rollout

Statement

Date: Oct. 7, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Patrick Meehan (PA-07) today issued the following statement regarding the messy rollout of the Obamacare health care exchanges:

"The first few days of the Obamacare rollout have been much like the last few years of its implementation -- chaotic and full of blunders. It's been a disastrous mess. Americans going online to find information about the health care exchanges were greeted with error messages and technical problems. And these problems continue to plague the system."

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) officials have admitted there are serious software problems that need to be addressed. The articles states: "The website is troubled by coding problems and flaws in the architecture of the system, according to insurance-industry advisers, technical experts and people close to the development of the marketplace." (Software, Design Defects Cripple Health-Care Website, The Wall Street Journal, October 7, 2013)

"Americans are rightly concerned. The people behind these technical failures are the same people expected to protect Americans' personal information in the Obamacare data hub. If they can't get this right, how can they be expected to secure that information?"

Meehan, who serves as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection and Security Technologies, has held two congressional hearings on the data hub and recently introduced legislation to delay the data hub. Meehan remarked after a July congressional hearing, "Today's hearing made it clear they're not ready."

"The harmful effects of Obamacare are being felt all across this country. Employers are dropping coverage, cutting hours and reducing workers to part-time status. I will continue working to protect Pennsylvanians from the harmful effects of Obamacare."
